An Eye for injunctions

There’s some useful background info on so-called ‘super-injunctions’ in this piece from Private Eye.

These injunctions not only ban publication of articles – they also ban even the mention of the injunction’s existence.

Oil be seeing you
They came to light following the failed attempt by lawyers to stop the Guardian even reporting a question tabled in the House of Commons about waste dumping involving the oil company, Trafigura.

Not coming soon to a TV near you
But it’s not just the corporate great and not-so-good who have used these injunctions.

  • The Eye says that BBC presenter Andrew Marr won an injunction to stop the media revealing “private information” about him.
  • And it says “another TV presenter” won a gagging order stopping reports of  a death threat he had received at his work.
